Before the birth of Metrolina Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP), NP’s were participating jointly with the Metrolina Association of Physician Assistants (MAPA) for continuing education meetings. The joint meetings were so successful; the organization became too large to find facilities to hold the monthly dinner meetings. As such, a number of solutions were proposed, but by the time the PA’s and NP’s met separately on January 29th 1998, to discuss the issue, MAPA had decided to restrict their membership to PA’s only. On that day, with 58 NP’s present, an affirmative vote was taken to form our own organization. The group was truly energized!!! Officers and Board were elected; a bylaws committee comprised of Board members was formed. However, it was later determined that as part of North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA), MCNP will function under the by-laws of NCNA. Attendees also voted to continue the dinner, and sponsored speaker format for future monthly meetings. Jane Link chaired the meeting to facilitate the formation of the new organization. Donations were set at $15.00 per calendar year to be paid by March. MAPA agreed to divide the existing treasury equally, which gave MCNP start up money. The first NP dinner meeting sponsored by Glaxo-Welcome at Red Rocks Café was held on Tuesday March 10th, 1998. The topic: New Trends in Asthma Treatment, by Dr. Hugo Black, from Asthma & Allergy Specialists. A brief business meeting preceded the dinner, in which attendees were informed that the process for awarding CME’s/CEU’s is being explored for future programs. Future meeting dates were also announced as well as information that meetings will be the second week of each month and will rotate from Tuesday to Wednesday to Thursday, to maximize attendance. Our first Board Members were: President: Michelle Olshan-Perlmutter President Elect: Donna Worley Treasurer: Kathy Bratschi Secretary: Kay Boggs. Our first NP Newsletter was published in February 1998. |
